The news that HBO won’t renew the Gossip Girls Reboot for its third season has upset several fans. However, one of the actresses, Jordan Alexander, has taken the news more positively. While she admits that she isn’t happy with the cancellation report, she is still grateful for the time she spent on the show and calls it one of her best experiences.
When Alexander was asked if she felt the network had done a disservice by canceling the show when it had a very diverse cast, she answered that she was happy the show had even happened. But, unfortunately, Alexander wasn’t the only one who held this opinion.
Joshua Safran thanks fans and network for their support
According to an Instagram post shared by Joshua Safran, the creator of Gossip Girls, they will always be grateful to the studio and network for their support and faith in the show. Safran adds that he also appreciates the talent that the show writers portrayed, the cast’s collaboration and friendship, and the crew’s hard work. He adds that the set was the best he’d ever been on.
Safran says that the show is now looking for another home. However, he acknowledges that it may be difficult to find in the current climate. Despite this, he tells fans that if they don’t find another place, he will be glad that the show ended at its peak. He thanks Gossip Girls fans as they were the reason the show came back and would be the reason if another reboot were to happen.
Shortly after Safran made this post, other show stars took to social media to thank their fans for their support and expressed their gratitude for working on the reboot. Despite her satisfaction with the show’s end, Alexander said she would be happy to continue with Gossip Girls if it found another home.
The Gossip Girls reboot didn’t meet fan expectations
Season 1 of the Gossip Girls reboots premiered in July 2021. It soon generated the highest ratings that HBO had ever received. Despite the good start, the show didn’t live up to expectations from fans and critics. It didn’t receive the same praise that the original Gossip Girls, which ran from 2007 to 2012, had.
When the network first announced the reboot, fans of the original gossip girls were excited. Of course, it helped that the show would use the original creators, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, along with Safran. Furthermore, the cast was more diverse as it included people of color starring in major roles and was less heteronormative.
How the reboot failed
Despite these positives, critics felt the show fell short in several ways. First of all, it was difficult to tell if the new Gossip Girls aimed to be a critique of the original, a tribute, or something new entirely.
The show seems to borrow ideas from the original. For instance, while its cast had new members, they are still fairly similar to the cast of the original Gossip Girls. In addition, the show uses the same platform to disrupt the young students’ lives.
Although these details aim for the nostalgia felt by fans of the original show, the Gossip Girls Reboot fails to maintain the attention of the audience as it has nothing new to offer, thus why many critics argue the show failed, ultimately leading to its recent cancellation.
HBO makes a statement on the cancellation
HBO has released a statement thanking the creator and cast of Gossip Girls for their work. Despite its decision not to go forward with the show, the company is grateful for all the interesting storylines that Gossip Girls brought.
